What Is Compounding?

The science of personalized medication.

Pharmacy compounding is the science of preparing personalized medication for patient needs that can’t be met by commercially available drugs. When the manufactured option doesn’t fit — wrong strength, wrong form, wrong flavor, or contains an ingredient you can’t tolerate — a compounding pharmacy can prepare exactly what your provider prescribes.

Custom strengths & forms

The exact dose your provider prescribed, in the dosage form that works for you — capsules, creams, suspensions, troches, gels, sublingual preparations, lozenges, and more.

Ingredient adjustments

Free of dyes, preservatives, gluten, lactose, or other ingredients you need to avoid. Multi-ingredient compounds combining what your provider prescribes into a single medication.

People-friendly preparations

Flavored pediatric liquids that children will take, pet-friendly compounds for cats and dogs, transdermal creams for patients who can’t swallow pills — compounding meets the patient where they are.

Compounding FAQ

What patients ask about compounding.

Can’t find what you need? Call (213) 747-3200.

What is a compounding pharmacy and how is it different from a regular pharmacy?
A compounding pharmacy prepares custom medications from raw pharmacy-grade ingredients to match a provider’s specific prescription. A regular pharmacy dispenses pre-manufactured medications. Compounding pharmacies are useful when the commercial version doesn’t fit — a different strength, a different form (cream instead of pill), an ingredient that needs to be removed for allergies, a custom flavor for children or pets, or a multi-ingredient preparation. Grand Specialty Pharmacy is a Los Angeles compounding pharmacy that does both — we fill regular prescriptions AND compound custom medications.
What types of medications can be compounded?
We compound across 13+ specialties including pain management, hormone replacement, dermatology, palliative care, pediatrics, podiatry, dentistry, veterinary, gastroenterology, ear, nose and throat, rheumatic disease, weight loss, and sports medicine. Forms include capsules, tablets, creams, ointments, gels, suspensions, troches, lozenges, sublingual preparations, and more.
How long does it take to compound a prescription?
Most compounded prescriptions are ready within 1–3 business days, depending on complexity and ingredient availability. Simple compounds may be same-day. Call (213) 747-3200 to discuss timing for your specific prescription, and we’ll let you know what to expect when your provider’s prescription arrives.
Are compounded medications safe?
Yes — when prepared by a licensed, accredited compounding pharmacy with USP-grade ingredients and clinical pharmacist review on every prescription. Grand Specialty Pharmacy is a licensed California pharmacy, LegitScript Certified, and NABP Healthcare Merchant accredited. Every compound is prepared on-site to your provider’s exact specifications with full ingredient traceability.
Do you compound for pets?
Yes. We compound veterinary medications for dogs, cats, and other animals based on your veterinarian’s prescription. We can make flavored liquids (chicken, beef, tuna), custom-dose chews, transdermal creams, and other forms that make administering medication to pets much easier.
How do I get a compounded medication?
Your healthcare provider writes a prescription for a compounded medication. You can send us a service request with the details, have your provider’s office send the prescription directly, or call (213) 747-3200 to discuss. Our pharmacy team will review the prescription, coordinate with your provider if anything needs clarification, and prepare your compound.
Do you deliver compounded medications in Los Angeles?
Yes. We offer free local delivery within our standard zone in Los Angeles, and extended delivery (often at a minimal charge) for areas outside our standard zone. You can also pick up at our Downtown LA location at 1513 S Grand Ave. Call (213) 747-3200 to confirm delivery for your address.
Does insurance cover compounded medications?
Insurance coverage for compounded medications varies by plan and by the specific compound. Some compounds are fully covered, some are partially covered, and some are not covered. Call (213) 747-3200 with your insurance information and we’ll help you understand coverage and pricing before you commit to a compound.
